The broad objectives of NSS are to

• To understand the issues and problems of the community and society.
• To involve volunteers in the problem-solving process of the community.
• To develop the sense of community and social responsibility in the students.
• To apply and find practical solutions of the problems pertaining to local community.
• To develop and encourage life in group, sharing of responsibilities and leadership.
• To encourage qualities of nationalism, leadership, brotherhood and integrity of character.
• To enlarge basic skills and practical knowledge available in the community and region
• To motivate and prepare students for natural calamities such as disasters, epidemics, draught and other large scale calamities.
• To make volunteers conscious about cleanliness, awareness, humility and modesty while carrying out the activities of community.

The motto or watchword of the National Service Scheme is: ‘NOT ME BUT YOU’. This reflects the essence of democratic living and upholds the need for selfless service and appreciation of the other person’s point of view and also to show consideration for fellow human beings. It underlines that the welfare of an individual is prerequisite for the welfare of society on the whole. Therefore, it should be the aim of the NSS to demonstrate this motto in its day-to-day programme.

NSS was formally launched on 24th September, 1969, the birth centenary year of the Father of the Nation. Therefore, 24 September is celebrated every year as NSS Day with appropriate programmes and activities

The symbol of the National Service Scheme, is based on the wheel of the chariot of the Konark Sun Temple situated in Orissa. These giant wheels of the Sun Temple portray the cycle of creation, preservation and release, and signify the movement in life across time and space. The design of the symbol, a simplified form of the Sun-chariot wheel primarily depicts movement. The wheel signifies the progressive cycle of life. It stands for continuity as well as change and implies the continuous striving of NSS for social advancement of the individual unto the last.

The NSS Badge clarifies that the unit feels pride in serving the community and thereby the nation itself:

All the volunteers opting to serve the nation through the NSS-led community service wear the NSS badge with pride and a sense of responsibility towards helping the needy ones. The Konark wheel in the NSS badge having 8 bars signifies the 24 hours of the day, reminding the wearer to be ready for the service of the nation round the clock i.e. for 24 hours. Red colour in the badge signifies energy and spirit displayed by the NSS volunteers. The Blue colour signifies the cosmos of which the NSS is a tiny part, ready to contribute its share for the welfare of the mankind.

During Silver Jubilee Year the NSS theme song has been composed. All NSS volunteers are expected to learn the theme song and sing the song during NSS programmes and celebrations.

• The leader will function as the head of the committee
• The other members will work as per the instruction issued by the leader.
• The committee will prepare the final report of the activities along with the necessary documents.
